Helen Shaw Thorngate receiving the Robe of Achievement

In 1924 Helen Shaw Thorngate along with her husband became a medical missionary to China and continued in that capacity for 26 years. Helen was a valued member of the missionary team and Mabel West is quoted as saying, “she was a great addition to the China Mission family, her friendliness, wisdom, and sense of humor were greatly appreciated. She accepted the Chinese on equal terms, learned their ways, enjoyed their food and entertainments.” She was a good example of a mother to the Chinese women and was a loyal worker in the hospital as well as the church.

She was generous with her time and money and always looking to make others more comfortable. She helped make a home for the women doctors and made meals for the busy doctors.

Even though she did not think she was a good teacher, when Mabel West broke her hip, after providing health care, Helen took over Mabel’s classes and was a much beloved teacher.

She was the treasurer of the Medical Group from 1953-1965. She helped with Sabbath services held weekly in her home and was a productive member of the Pacific Coast Association.
