Nellie Jo Bond Brissey

Nellie Jo Bond was born in Salem, WV. She married Richard Brissey and had two children who made her a grandmother. She always had a keen interest in genealogy, camping, and traveling. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics in 1959. She was Director of Financial Aid at Salem College from 1971-1983 and Financial Aid Counselor at West Virginia University from 1983-1997. She retired in 1997.

She was a member of the Salem SDB Church and served as chairperson of the Library Committee, church treasurer, and a deaconess. She was also a member of the Finance, Building Finance, and Memorial Committees. She was also the Women’s Choir director and was a choir member for many years before that. At various times Nellie Jo  also served as church clerk, YF leader, Sabbath School teacher, and MORE 2000 Discipleship Committee member.

Nellie Jo along with her husband were great supporters of the youth and have acted as Conference sponsorers and provided transportation to a generation of youth to Pre-Con, church camps, and on heritage tours.

She was Southeastern Association Moderator, food purchaser for Camp Joy and a delegate to Associations and ordinations. She served the denomination as registrar for Conference as well as being a Host Committee member. She was also a member of the Christian Social Action committee. She was a charter member of the Seattle SDB church and was the first woman to serve the denomination’s Memorial Board.

Nelli Jo served her community as a member of the Clarksburg Madrigals, the Friends of Fort New Salem, and as a founding member of ‘Watchcare.’ She also volunteered with Bi-County Nutrition and was a supporter of the Salem Apple Butter Fest.

Nellie Jo was an effective listener and peacemaker, and was well known for her cheerfulness, optimism, and thrift. She confronted problems until they were resolved. Although she was uncomfortable with recognition, she deserved it nonetheless.
